Cast Iron cap guns were only started being made around 1870, so pre-1900 cast iron cap pistols are top of the line in this collecting field. This is a RARE cast iron single shot cap pistol manufactured in 1880. The majority of manufacturer of black powder Cast Iron cap pistols & cap bombs, as well as black powder cannons in the late 1800s were made by Stevens one of the most prolific makers who beginning manufacturing around 1870. This piece is by Lockwood, another prominent Cast Iron cap gun manufacturer, but is considered to be a much rarer Maker. The early style birds head grips have a checkered pattern of on both sides. The right display side has a raised star on the frame and has almost all of its original brown lacquer, including a spot on the trigger. The obverse side has the model’s name “BOOM” is emblazoned on the left side of the frame in raised letters with much less lacquer, but remnants remain on the checkered grip.
Cap shooters go from a "no star" rating (common) to a "5 star" ratings that is described as "Extremely Rare, almost 1 of a kind". I have never seen a 5-star cap gun but have seen an image of one along with the examples in the Cap Shooter's book. This example is shown in the Cast Iron Toy Guns and Cap Shooters book on page 17 as BOOM**** (4 STARS) item B29.1, circa 1880. This 4-star rating is described in the book as being “VERY RARE”. 1870's - 1890's cast Iron cap pistols vary in size. The smallest cap pistols starting around 1879 were about 2 1/2” long and called penny guns as they actually cost 1 penny at the time. The more sophisticated cap guns that looked and fired like later cap guns were 2 7/8 – 3”. This single shot cap shooter is 4 3/8” long and weighs 3.1 ounces or 87 grams. The body is 2 cast pieces of Iron with an Iron rivet in the bird's head grip and one on the barrel holding it together. Note that most cap pistol have a one-piece cast hammer and trigger; designed so when the one-piece hammer/trigger is cocked, the trigger rotates forward and is ready to release the hammer and fire the cap pistol. This cap gun has the earlier style, more sophisticated 2-piece separate hammer and trigger mechanism. When you cock the hammer, the spur trigger does not move until the hammer is fully cocked and engages the catch in the spring-loaded trigger mechanism. The cap pistol mechanism functions properly, the hammer & trigger cock properly, and the hammer has a strong spring and snap to fire properly and will easily burst a cap when the trigger is pulled. This piece is 100% original with no damage or alterations. Note there is a small open sliver on the bottom of the barrel on one side of the casting. I am unsure if this was part of the manufacturing process or a casting flaw. The inside edge of this channel has deep dark naturally aged patina, so it is original to the cap shooter, has no bearing on the functionality, and is of no consequence, and is just one of the idiosyncrasies in hand made cast Iron items.
Having any original finish on an 1880 cap pistol is rare, and this is the only example I have seen of the BOOM cap shooter. The images show the remains of the original, desirous brown lacquer found on this pistol, especially on almost all of the right display side; and demonstrates its excellent condition overall for its extreme age of 140 years. This would be great for any Kid, Child, Cap Pistol, Cap shooter, Cast Iron, Toy, 19th Century, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Old West, Western, or Western Americana / Nostalgia display; or use as a Man Cave / Office decoration / conversation piece / paper weight; and would make a great gift and keepsake for some lucky young buckaroo.
